Attacks across Nigeria by a radical Muslim sect killed at least 39 people Sunday, with the majority dying on the steps of a Catholic church in a massive explosion after Christmas Mass.
Elsewhere, a bomb exploded amid gunfire in the central Nigeria city of Jos and a suicide car bomber attacked the military in the nation's northeast as part of an apparently coordinated assault by the sect known as Boko Haram.
The Christmas Day violence, denounced by world leaders and the Vatican, showed the threat of the widening insurrection posed by Boko Haram against Nigeria's weak central government. Despite a recent paramilitary crackdown against the sect in the oil-rich nation, it appears that Africa's most populous nation remains unable to stop the threat.
"These are cowardly attacks on families gathered in peace and prayer to celebrate a day which symbolizes harmony and goodwill towards others," Britain's Foreign Secretary William Hague said in a statement.

A Christian worker in Britain has filed a lawsuit after losing her job when she exposed a campaign of systematic harassment by fundamentalist Muslims.
In a landmark legal case, Nohad Halawi, a former employee at London's Heathrow Airport, is suing her former employer for unfair dismissal, claiming that Christian staff members, including her, were discriminated against because of their religious beliefs.
Halawi's case is being supported by the Christian Legal Centre (CLC), an organization that provides legal support for Christians in the United Kingdom. CLC says the case raises important legal issues, and also questions over whether Muslims and Christians are treated differently by employers.
Halawi, who immigrated to Britain from Lebanon in 1977, told the London Telegraph "that she was told that she would go to Hell for her religion, that Jews were responsible for the September 11th terror attacks, and that a friend was reduced to tears having been bullied for wearing a cross."
Halawi worked at the airport for 13 years as a saleswoman at World Duty Free, where she sold perfumes. Halawi was dismissed in July, following complaints by five Muslims that she was being "anti-Islamic."
Halawi says her problems with the Muslims began after she defended a Christian friend who worked with her at the same store, and who was being harassed by the Muslims for wearing a necklace with a cross. [...].

La réponse n'aura pas tardé. Deux jours après l'annonce, par l'hebdomadaire satirique Charlie Hebdo, de la sortie d'un numéro baptisé «Charia Hebdo», avec «Mahomet rédacteur en chef», le siège du magazine a été détruit par un incendie. Situés dans le 20ème arrondissement de Paris, les locaux ont à première vue été attaqués dans la nuit de mardi à mercredi au cocktail molotov. Aucune victime n'est à déplorer mais «tout ce qui nous sert à faire le journal a cramé», selon Stéphane Charbonnier, alias Charb, dessinateur et directeur de la publication de Charlie Hebdo. Le site internet du journal a par ailleurs été piraté, affichant en lieu et place de sa page d'accueil une image de la grande mosquée de La Mecque, accompagnée de la phrase «No god but Allah» («Pas d'autre Dieu qu'Allah»). Saudi Arabia is spearheading the establishment of a controversial new "interreligious and intercultural dialogue center" in the Austrian capital Vienna.
The King Abdullah Center for Inter-Religious and Inter-Cultural Dialogue (here, here and here) was inaugurated at the Albertina Museum in downtown Vienna on October 13. The foreign ministers of the three founding states - Austria, Spain and Saudi Arabia - were in attendance. The institution will be located at the Palais Sturany on the Schottenring in the heart of Vienna.
The Saudis say the purpose of the multi-million-dollar initiative is to "foster dialogue" between the world's major religions in order to "prevent conflict."
But critics say the center is an attempt by Saudi Arabia to establish a permanent "propaganda center" in central Europe from which to spread the conservative Wahhabi sect of Islam. [...]

He has been asked three times to recant his beliefs, but has refused. If he refuses a fourth time, he could be executed at any time; he will be asked again today, and could die tomorrow.

This is, of course, against international law, for what little that means. More surprisingly, it is also apparently against Iranian law: Pastor Nadarkhani was not, it seems, a practising Muslim before he converted to Christianity, so there is no apostasy. One Iranian court ruled that this meant he was innocent; the Supreme Court, however, decided that because he has Muslim ancestry, he remains guilty. CBS' 60 Minutes recently featured a devastating exposé on the violation of Greek minorities' rights in Turkey.

Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew of the Greek Orthodox Church, headquartered in Istanbul, courageously criticized the Turkish government for treating him as a "second-class citizen." He went on to state that he felt like he was being "crucified."

This is perhaps the first time that a major American TV network has dared to broadcast coverage of the discriminatory practices of the repressive Turkish regime against Greek minorities. It appears that CBS was able to withstand intense pressure Ankara and highly-paid Washington lobbyists that routinely try to censor programs that expose the Turkish government's abusive behavior.

Not surprisingly, various Turkish officials, including Pres. Gul, reacted angrily. Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu disingenuously suggested that the Greek Patriarch should have submitted his complaints to the authorities in Ankara. The Foreign Minister acted as if he was unaware that for years countless complaints had been lodged by the Patriarch about the injustices suffered by his people. The Turkish government not only has remained unresponsive to these complaints, but has carried out a deliberate policy of harassment and intimidation to force thousands of Greeks, Armenians, Assyrians and Jews to abandon their homes and businesses and relocate overseas. Quelles sont les causes des émeutes urbaines qui ont déferlé sur Londres depuis le 6 août ? La pauvreté, la marginalisation sociale, l'absence d'autorité parentale, la haine de la police ou le pur vandalisme expliquent, pêle-mêle, cette flambée de violence qui a envahi le petit écran à grand renfort de chromos.

Mais, contrairement aux idées reçues, les pires saccages n'ont pas eu lieu dans les arrondissements les plus pauvres où rôdent les damnés du quart-monde. Tottenham, Hackney, Clapham, Croydon ou Enfield, théâtres des plus graves violences, sont des quartiers types de la mixité sociale qui est la norme dans la capitale. Ce mélange traditionnel entre riches et pauvres fonctionne sans trop d'accrocs en période d'essor économique.

By midnight police managed to secure a 200-metre stretch of the Tottenham High Road, scene of some of the worst rioting on Saturday night.
But as fire engines entered the street, and began putting out blazing cars and buildings, the rioters spread north and west through back-streets. To the north, at Tottenham Hale, Aldi supermarket was ransacked and set on fire. So too was a nearby carpet shop, causing a huge blaze.
Looters turned up with cars and shopping trolleys to carry away stolen goods. Nearby, large groups of youths congregated in the surrounding streets with sticks, bottles and hammers. [...]

Six years ago yesterday, on July 7, 2005, Islamist suicide bombers attacked London's transit system. They blew up three subway trains and a bus, killing 52 people and leaving a nation groping for answers.

Whereas 911 was the work of a foreign terrorist group, 7/7 was the work of British citizens. The question that haunts London is why four men born and brought up in Britain were gripped by such fanatic zeal for a murderous, mediaeval dogma.

The British authorities have expended much effort in seeking to understand how the 7/7 terrorists acquired their perverted ideas and became "radicalised". In the wake of the attacks, much ink was spilled over the role of extremist preachers and radical mosques. More recently, the focus has shifted to universities as recruitment centres for terrorists.

But this obsession with radicalisation misses the point. The real question is why so many young men - who by all accounts are intelligent, articulate and integrated - come to find this violent, reactionary ideology so attractive. To answer it, we need to look not at extremist preachers or university lecturers but also at public policy and, in particular, the failed policy of multiculturalism. [...]

An Egyptian Christian telecom mogul has angered Islamic hard-liners by posting an online cartoon of Mickey Mouse with a beard and Minnie in a face veil.
The ultraconservative Islamists, known as Salafis, called the cartoon posted by Naguib Sawiris on Twitter a mockery of Islam. They launched an online campaign calling on Muslims in Egypt to boycott Sawiris' mobile phone company Mobinil. Shares of Mobilnil and Orascom Telecom, which Sawiris founded, both fell Monday on the Egyptian stock exchange.
Sawiris, who is also a politician, promotes a secular Egypt. He owns media companies and after Mubarak stepped down on Feb. 11, he launched a political party that calls for separation of state and religion.
After the cartoon posted a few days ago stirred complaints on Twitter, Sawiris tweeted an apology on Friday and claimed he was joking.
"I apologize for those who don't take this as a joke; I just thought it was a funny picture; no disrespect meant. I am sorry," he tweeted.
But new Facebook groups cropped and quickly gained more than 60,000 followers, calling for a boycott of his widely used cell phone company.
Named "We are joking Sawiris," the Facebook group said: "If you are really a Muslim, and you love your religion, boycott his projects. We have to cut out the tongue of any person who attacks our religion."
At least 15 Salafi lawyers have filed lawsuits accusing Sawiris of religious contempt, an official at the prosecutor general office said. The official spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media.

O sonho de o Irão ter uma equipa a competir no torneio de futebol feminino nos Jogos Olímpicos de 2012, em Londres, foi destroçado por uma decisão inesperada: o véu islâmico que as jogadoras usam durante as partidas infringe as regras da FIFA. A notícia foi conhecida instantes antes do início do jogo de qualificação diante da Jordânia, e a partida já não se realizou. No relvado, as jogadores já tinham alinhado para o começo da partida, e algumas receberam com lágrimas e consternação o facto de serem impedidas de jogar.

As futebolistas iranianas jogam com um fato de corpo inteiro e um lenço na cabeça. The U.S. Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) expressed its concern over the demolition of the 200-year-old Greek Orthodox Chapel of Saint Thekla in the village of Vokolida, in the area of the Republic of Cyprus under the control of the Turkish troops and administered by Turkish Cypriot authorities. The church was demolished on May 2, 2011. USCIRF calls on local Turkish Cypriot authorities to commit to rebuild the church.

“Local Turkish Cypriot authorities have generally failed to take adequate measures to protect religious places of worship from vandals and looters.” said USCIRF Chair, Leonard Leo. “Allowing the demolition of the Saint Thekla chapel exemplifies the ongoing disrespect and violations by Turkish troops and local Turkish Cypriot authorities for the religious freedom and heritage of Greek Orthodox and other religious minority communities in the northern part of Cyprus,” continued Mr. Leo.

A USCIRF delegation travelled to northern Cyprus in February 2011 and saw firsthand the decrepit state of numerous Christian Orthodox churches caused by a prohibition on religious minority groups against repairing their places of worship. [...]

A violência entre os dois grupos religiosos lançou o caos durante a noite no densamente populado bairro de Imbaba, na capital, após o ataque de muçulmanos a uma igreja, depois de se ter sabido que uma mulher cristã que queria converter-se ao islão teria sido ali encerrada.
O primeiro-ministro Essam Charaf adiou a visita que tinha marcada para os Emirados Árabes Unidos e Bahrain, segundo está a avançar a televisão estatal egípcia. Os confrontos levaram a que o exército e a polícia anti-motim tivesse de actuar, tendo sido confirmado já que 190 pessoas vão ser julgadas em tribunal militar devido a estes confrontos.
"O Conselho Supremo Militar [que exerce provisoriamente o poder no país, desde a deposição de Hosni Mubarak, a 11 de Fevereiro] decidiu enviar para julgamento no Tribunal Supremo Militar todos aqueles que foram detidos durante os incidentes de ontem, ou seja, 190 pessoas", foi anunciado pelo organismo na sua página na rede social Facebook.

A emigração muçulmana transforma a Finlândia

As in other European countries (here and here), the politically correct guardians of Finnish multiculturalism have tried to silence public discussion about the escalating problem of Muslim immigration.
In March 2009, for example, Jussi Kristian Halla-aho, a politician and well-known political commentator, was taken to court on charges of "incitement against an ethnic group" and "breach of the sanctity of religion" for writing that Islam is a religion of paedophilia. He was referring to the Islamic prophet Mohammed, who is believed to have married a six year old girl and consummated the marriage when she was nine.
A Helsinki court later dropped the charges of blasphemy but ordered Halla-aho to pay a fine of €330 ($450) for disturbing religious worship. The Finnish public prosecutor, incensed at the lower court's dismissal of the blasphemy charges, appealed the case to the Finnish Supreme Court, where it is now being reviewed.
Halla-Aho, the best-known political blogger in Finland, maintains a blog entitled Scripta, that deals with issues such as "immigration, multiculturalism, tolerance, racism, freedom of speech and political correctness." His blog has between 3,000 and 6,000 readers a day. According to Halla-aho, immigration is a taboo topic in Finland. "Tintin no Congo", segunda aventura de Tintin, "velha" de 77 anos, volta a ser alvo de acusações de racismo, desta vez por parte de um congolês, residente na Bélgica, que avançou com um processo no Tribunal de Primeira Instância de Bruxelas contra a sociedade Moulinsart, que gere os direitos da obra de Hergé, exigindo a sua imediata retirada de circulação.
O autor da queixa, Mbutu Mondondo Bienvenu, considera o álbum "racista e xenófobo", acrescentando que "foram estas teses racistas que serviram de suporte às descriminações sociais, às segregações étnicas e a actos de violência como os genocídios". E acrescenta que Hergé reconheceu que o álbum podia ter essa leitura quando disse "que, na sua época, não podia deixar de considerar os negros como crianças grandes", afirmando "não ser mais racista que os seus contemporâneos", reclamando, por isso, indemnização de um euro.
Esqueceu-se, no entanto, de que Hergé também afirmou "não gostar dos colonialistas", fez diversas alterações quando remodelou o álbum para a versão colorida, em 1946, e que condenou claramente o tráfico de escravos negros em "Carvão no Porão". [...]

Baroness Neville-Jones told the Daily Telegraph that that at the same time the government need to persuade the majority of the population that the UK is a single nation.
The minister said there needed to be a new approach in which people did not simply “rub along together and as long as people obey the law that’s quite sufficient.”
“I think it’s a common experience now that we know less about each other than we used to and I think there’s a very strong feeling that we need to understand each other and we need to be working together as a nation,” Lady Neville-Jones added.
“[We are] trying to convince minorities in this country that they actually do have a long term future here and that it’s their country as much as anybody else’s,” she said in an interview.

Jovens bilingues com desempenho pior na escola

Researcher Reza Kormi-Nouri's study shows that bilingual children have a linguistic head start when they first go to school, but fall behind as they get older. His study, published in the 'Bilingualism: Language and Cognition' journal, runs counter to previous previous findings in the field.
"It's surprising because until now we believed it was the other way around: that bilingual children do worse in the first years of school but then catch up," said Kormi-Nouri in a release.
Kormi-Nouri carried out two types of tests in Iran on bilingual and monolingual children aged between 7 and 12-years-old. All of the children were tested in Persian, the language used in school. At home, the bilingual children spoke either Turkish or Kurdish.
The children were first given three minutes to come up with as many words as possible starting with a certain letter or relating to a particular category.
The younger bilingual children matched the single-language children in the letter test and scored higher in the category test. As they grew older, however, the bilingual children were overtaken, and Kormi-Nouri noted that the discrepancy widened with age. [...]

Copts in Egypt are begging for Egyptian Armed Forces protection today after a Muslim mob of several thousand attacked their church in the village of Soul, about 30 kilometers from Cairo, last night. The Church of St. Mina and St. George was torched, and its clergy are unaccounted for. The fire department and security forces failed to respond to Coptic pleas for help during the arson attack.

According to a report from the Washington-based Coptic American Friendship Association, the mob, chanting “Allahu Akbar,” pulled down the church’s cross and detonated a handful of gas cylinders inside the structure. The ensuing fire destroyed the church and all its contents, including the sacred relics of centuries-old saints. It is reported that a romantic relationship between a Christian man and a Muslim woman, which sharia forbids, and the refusal of the woman’s father to kill her to restore the community’s “honor,” aroused the Muslim ire. Shahbaz Bhatti was Pakistan’s Minister for Minorities and today he paid the price for belonging to the most despised Pakistani minority of all: Christians. He was shot dead in his car for the crime of campaigning to reform the country’s medieval blasphemy laws. Those laws are used to make life hell for Christians – but that doesn’t seem to bother Britain and the EU, which pour millions of pounds into Pakistan and don’t make a big deal out of anti-Christian persecution.
I don’t recall an enormous fuss being made, either, when Egypt last week acquitted the suspected murderers of six Coptic Christians mown down as they left Mass in Nag Hammadi in January. That was the “justice” handed out to Christians in Mubarak’s Egypt. If the Muslim Brotherhood seize power, this sort of case won’t even come to court.
Thank God, then, for our allies in Afghanistan. Following intense and secretive diplomatic pressure, they have magnanimously decided not to execute a man who converted to Christianity. So, you see, we did bring freedom to the Afghan people after all!

O multiculturalismo em retirada

At long last a European politician, Britain’s Prime Minister David Cameron, lifted the curtain on the pernicious dimensions of multiculturalism. After several decades of home grown terrorism and an acceptance of separation by Muslim groups in the United Kingdom, the prime minister said, “enough.”

A new course will be charted that moves from accommodation to integration. There may be a risk of xenophobia with the Cameron approach, but it is a worthwhile trade-off if terrorist impulses are thwarted.

Mr. Cameron called his strategy “muscular liberalism,” to wit: confronting extremist Islamic thought and challenging those efforts that attempt to undermine Western values. For example, the prime minister made special mention of zero tolerance for the subjugation of women, a practice permitted because of Islamic separation and application of sharia.

The notion that different groups within a society should be encouraged to pursue their own cultural paths is a formulation based on religious tolerance. But as George Santayana, among others, noted the first duty of the tolerant man is to exercise intolerance for intolerance. In other words, a proverbial line in the sand must be drawn when religious groups use societal tolerance to promote intolerance.

Christian Democrat leader Maxime Verhagen on Monday said the multicultural society has failed. He was speaking during the recording of tv show Nova College Tour, reports the Algemeen Dagblad.
Verhagen told the programme the Dutch no longer feel at home in their own country and immigrants are not entirely happy here either.
The minister wants the Dutch to be prouder of their country like people in the US where they first say they are American and then where they originally come from, says the paper.
He follows his European colleagues in declaring multiculturalism a failure. German chancellor Angela Merkel, British prime minister David Cameron and French president Nicolas Sarkozy have all said the same, the paper states.

A row over specific references to Christianity has prevented EU foreign ministers from agreeing a joint declaration condemning religious persecution, despite a recent spate of attacks on minorities in Iraq and Egypt.

Instead, a draft text which called on EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton to come up with "concrete proposals" to boost freedom of religion was sent back to the drawing board on Monday evening (31 January).

Italian foreign minister Franco Frattini led opposition to the text which "firmly" condemned the "acts of terrorism targeting places of worship", claiming the document showed an "excess of secularism".

"The final text didn't include any mention of Christians, as if we were talking of something else, so I asked the text to be withdrawn," he told reporters in Brussels. [...]

The Muslim population in the UK will almost double to 5.5million within 20 years, it has been claimed. Immigration and high birth rates will mean nearly one in ten Britons will be Muslim by 2030, according to a worldwide study about the spread of Islam. And the forecasts mean Britain will have more Muslims than Kuwait.
From 1990 to 2010 the number of followers of the Islamic faith around the world increased at an average rate of 2.2 per cent annually. Last year there were 1.57billion around the world.
The British increase in the Muslim population from the current 2.8million will be mainly driven by immigration, according to figures prepared by a Washington think tank. Projections by the respected Pew Research Centre said the 40 years between 1990 and 2030 will see a fivefold rise in Britain.
In 1990 there were 1.1million Muslims in Britain, representing two per cent of the population.
By last year that figure had risen to 2.8million, or four per cent. By 2030 the number will hit 5.5million - eight per cent of an estimated 68million population, Pew researchers said. [...]

In recent years, Finland’s largest cities have developed areas where more than a fifth of the population is of foreign origin. In these city parts, the changeability of people is great, and the original Finnish population continues to decrease.

In Helsinki’s Itäkeskus and other eastern residential areas, for example, more than one fifth of the population have foreign backgrounds, and their number is increasing by about one percent every year.
For her soon-to-be checked doctoral thesis for the University of Helsinki’s Geography Department, researcher Katja Vilkama studied cities’ immigrant concentrations.
According to Vilkama, areas like Itäkeskus are entryways into Finnish society. However, once immigrants start to earn more and become familiar with Finnish society, they often leave these city areas behind.
Vilkama found the population in such areas to be very mobile, as people were continuously moving in and out. In the Helsinki region, about one in five immigrant families moves areas every year. Estonian immigrants are especially prone to move, says Vilkama.
In fact, there are more people with foreign backgrounds leaving immigrant-heavy areas compared with the number of Finns moving out. However, as both sections of the population are replaced mostly by new immigrants, the number of Finns continues to diminish in these areas.

Fuen ese momento cuando un alumno de origen musulmán consideró que el ejemplo era una ofensa para su credo. Tras la denuncia interpuesta por la familia del menor, la Policía se personó en el Instituto para interrogar al profesor, tal y como informa hoy el Diario de Cádiz. German authorities hardened a crackdown on Islamic groups yesterday, raiding homes and schools that reportedly belong to adherents of fundamentalist Salafi Islam.
German officials said the preemptive raids, conducted under German anti-Nazi laws of association, were aimed at uncovering unconstitutional or separatist acts and not part of an international terror hunt.
The raids targeted the Islamic Cultural Center of Bremen, on the North Sea, along with a group calling itself Invitation to Paradise in two small northwest German cities. Invitation to Paradise's leader has called for sharia, or Islamic law, to prevail one day but has specifically opposed using violence to impose it.
While some experts say police overreacted in conducting the raids, German officials have come under great pressure from local media and citizen groups to respond to some Muslim organizations that appear to resist joining mainstream German society.
“These groups are a problem for integration, even maybe for radicalization, though not necessarily for violent jihad. They are very orthodox and like to be separate but are not preaching but usually condemning violence,” says Alexander Ritzmann, a former Berlin member of parliament now with the European Foundation for Democracy in Brussels. “The problem is that some jihadis in Germany from before identified themselves as Salafi.”

A Turquia necessita de levantar as restrições aos cristãos ortodoxos

As Turkey celebrates its Independence Day on Oct. 29, Christians living there probably won’t be partaking in any celebratory parties.
Despite recent reforms in the country, human rights and the protection of religious minorities still require significant improvement.
One body that is continually being persecuted is the Ecumenical Patriarchate in Constantinople, present-day Istanbul.
This 1,700 year old living institution is the Mother Church of Christianity headed by His All Holiness Ecumenical Patriarch Bartholomew who shepherds the spiritual needs of the world’s 300 million Orthodox Christians.
Alas, the problems faced by the Patriarchate are plenty. Turkey, for example, does not recognize the “Ecumenical” title – an ecclesiastical designation instituted in the year 586. Belittlingly, Turkey refers to Bartholomew as the “Phanar Patriarch” after the district in Istanbul where he is headquartered, despite all other foreign leaders acknowledging his ecumenical status.
Hardline nationalists fear that by accepting this title the door will open for the Patriarchate to seek sovereign status like the Pope in Rome. This fear though is baseless, ignoring not only how Orthodoxy is actually administered but also the preachings of Patriarch Bartholomew who has unequivocally stated that “becoming a second Vatican is not in keeping with the Orthodox Church’s principles.”

Thilo Sarrazin's book "is not convincing, but it has convinced many people," said the influential Spiegel magazine, which this week has the Bundesbank executive on its cover, calling him a "people's hero."

His publisher is rushing to print more copies of "Germany Does Itself In" to meet demand. Online retailer Amazon.de has a massive 207 reader reviews on its website, with the average score 4.4 stars out of a possible five.

The Social Democrats (SPD), the centre-left political party Sarrazin belongs to, has been inundated with thousands of letters, emails and phone calls attacking the central bank board's desire to expel him.

"Listen to the voice of the people for once," Spiegel quoted one of the almost 4,000 emails as saying.

In the book, Sarrazin says Europe's top economy is being undermined, overwhelmed and made "more stupid" by poorly educated, fast-breeding, badly integrated and unproductive Muslim immigrants and their offspring. [...]

What do the controversies around the proposed mosque near Ground Zero, the eviction of American missionaries from Morocco earlier this year, the minaret ban in Switzerland last year, and the recent burka ban in France have in common? All four are framed in the Western media as issues of religious tolerance. But that is not their essence. Fundamentally, they are all symptoms of what the late Harvard political scientist Samuel Huntington called the "Clash of Civilizations," particularly the clash between Islam and the West.

Huntington's argument is worth summarizing briefly for those who now only remember his striking title. The essential building block of the post-Cold War world, he wrote, are seven or eight historical civilizations of which the Western, the Muslim and the Confucian are the most important.

The balance of power among these civilizations, he argued, is shifting. The West is declining in relative power, Islam is exploding demographically, and Asian civilizations—especially China—are economically ascendant. Huntington also said that a civilization-based world order is emerging in which states that share cultural affinities will cooperate with each other and group themselves around the leading states of their civilization. De violents incidents se sont produits dans la nuit de vendredi à samedi dans capitale iséroise après la mort, la veille, d'un malfaiteur dans une fusillade avec les forces de l'ordre. Les incidents ont éclaté vers minuit (22h00 GMT) et se sont prolongés une bonne partie de la nuit dans le quartier populaire de la Villeneuve, où vivait le malfaiteur tué lors d'une fusillade consécutive au braquage d'un casino.

Council bosses issued a document to all primary and secondary schools on how to avoid offending Muslim pupils who may still be fasting when the new term starts in September.

The tips from Stoke-on-Trent City council include distributing free school meals as packed lunches to take home and cancelling social events when Muslim parents might not be able to attend.

During Ramadan, it is compulsory for all males and females who have reached puberty to fast from dawn until sunset every day. Some younger children also choose to fast for all or part of the month.

The council says some pupils will get up before dawn to have their breakfast and, as a result, sleeping patterns could be interrupted. Schools are also advised to heighten staff awareness about factors affecting pupils during Ramadan. [...]

Increasing radicalism threatens stability in the Balkans. Just last week at a Serb-led rally against Kosovo governing authorities in the ethnically divided city of Mitrovica, a hand grenade exploded leaving one dead and ten injured. Serb and ethnic-Albanians leaders blamed each other for the attack. Balkan leaders need to begin acting on principle rather than narrow self-interest. Although the international community can support this process, ultimately regional leaders need to stand-up and be counted.

The Balkan region continues to be a hotbed for homegrown and imported extremists groups. Serbian nationalism is on the rise while missionaries of Wahhabi interpretation of Islam and other radical Islamic groups continue their efforts to establish a presence in Bosnia, Kosovo and other Muslim populated regions of the Balkans. The weak governing structures combined with growing unemployment and poverty make the region fertile ground for radical recruits.

It found that 69 per cent of offences were perpetrated by individuals holding British nationality.
Robin Simcox, co-author of the report, said their aim was to “focus the government’s counter-terrorism efforts.”
“There are clear trends emerging with those involving themselves in terrorist activity in the UK,” he added. “It is crucial that this is recognised and then acted upon by the relevant authorities.”
His comments follow private remarks by Assistant Commissioner John Yates, Britain’s most senior counter-terrorism officer, that the country faces “eye-watering cuts” in counter-terrorism funding that could hand an advantage to Al-Qaeda.

Among the chief protagonists in this new genre he mentions above all Bernard Lewis, the greatest Orientalist of our time, and Bat Ye'or, who popularised the term "Eurabia" to warn against the Islamicisation of Europe. So the Prime Minister of Turkey calls Israel "a festering boil in the Middle East that spreads hate and enmity," while his foreign minister compares Monday's Israeli naval raid on a flotilla of ships headed for the Gaza Strip, in which nine passengers were killed, to the attacks of September 11, 2001. For good measure, the Turks have also wagged their finger at the Obama Administration for not immediately denouncing Israel's actions.

Yet the more facts that come to light about the flotilla, its passengers and their sponsors, the more it seems clear that Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Ergodan's government, far more so than Israel's, must be held to account for Monday's violent episode. Maybe that's something the U.N. Human Rights Council, which on Wednesday condemned Israel for an "outrageous attack" and voted 32-3 to set up a "fact-finding mission" (with the U.S. in opposition), might get around to investigating, though we wouldn't hold our breath. MillatFacebook, meaning Nation Facebook in Urdu, was launched on Wednesday and has already attracted some 8,000 users.
Omar Zaheer Meer, one of the six web developers, said their aim was to offer an alternative to Facebook which condemned the contest encouraging users to submit images of the Prophet Mohammed.

Solamente unos días después del ataque que sufrió el periodista y dibujante Lars Vilks en la Universidad de Uppsala mientras daba una conferencia, unos desconocidos prendieron fuego a su actual domicilio, un chalet en Nynäshamnläge, provincia de Skåne en el sur de Suecia, donde Vilks se escondía desde hace algún tiempo.

A las 11.00 de esta mañana del sábado, un vecino avisó al caricaturista de que «alguien» había provocado un incendio en su casa rompiendo las ventanas y echando al interior botellas de plástico con gasolina. Los bomberos y la Policía acudieron con urgencia a aquel lugar y pudieron apagar el fuego antes de que se propagara por todo el chalet. Por su parte Vilks, 63 años, tuvo la suerte de no encontrarse allí cuando se produjo el incendio.

La Chambre a adopté jeudi à l'unanimité moins deux abstentions (du sp.a) une proposition de loi visant à interdire le port de vêtements qui empêchent l'identification d'une personne dans l'espace public. Visant particulièrement la burqa, cette proposition émane de la majorité, à l'initiative du MR.

Elle ne sortira toutefois ses effets que le jour où elle aura parcouru tout le parcours parlementaire.

Le Sénat dispose maintenant d'un délai de quinze jours pour évoquer la proposition.

Ensuite s'offre à lui un nouveau délai (renouvelable) de 60 jours pour éventuellement l'amender.

Or, l'imminence de la dissolution des assemblées entraînera la caducité de la proposition votée à la Chambre.

Dans ce cas, le texte pourra être relevé de caducité lors de la prochaine législature.

La causa de Najwa Malha, la adolescente de 16 años vetada en un instituto de Pozuelo de Alarcón (Madrid) por asistir a clase con hiyab (pañuelo islámico), sumó ayer el apoyo de varias ONG internacionales de derechos humanos.

Amnistía Internacional afirmó en un manifiesto que “todas las personas tienen derecho a decidir si usar o no indumentaria o símbolos religiosos, y que deben tomar esa decisión sin sufrir discriminación”. La Liga Española Pro Derechos Humanos también emitió un comunicado en “apoyo a Najwa Malha en su lucha por su derecho a la libertad religiosa”. “Es inadmisible la actitud de la dirección del establecimiento, que persiste en aplicar un reglamento interno anticonstitucional”, continúa esta ONG. Episódio sobre Maomé de South Park censurado

South Park is not known as a show that shies away from controversy, but last night its creators appeared to bow to threats of violence from a US Muslim group by censoring a typically irreverent episode about religious leaders, including Muhammad.

Wednesday night's show was labelled with the word "Censored" after the words Prophet Muhammad were beeped out during broadcast and images of the prophet in a bear outfit were substituted with ones of Santa Claus in the same costume.

But whether the changes were intended to acquiesce to the threats, or make fun of them, was not immediately clear. In the first part of the 200th episode screened last week, Muhammad appeared several times inside a bear suit, while the leaders of other religions were also depicted irreverently, including a scene which showed Buddha snorting drugs.

Before last night's show was aired, Islamists warned its creators, Matt Stone and Trey Parker, they could face severe retribution for repeating the depiction of Muhammad in costume. [...]

O Conselho Pedagógico da Faculdade de Direito da Universidade de Lisboa deverá apreciar na próxima semana o enunciado de um exame, relativo ao casamento homossexual, que alguns alunos afirmam ser uma "provocação discriminatória e ridícula".

Na prova de Direito Constitucional II, o regente da cadeira, Paulo Otero, propôs um enunciado segundo o qual a Assembleia da República aprovou um diploma que permite o casamento poligâmico entre seres humanos e entre humanos e animais vertebrados domésticos, como "um complemento à lei sobre o casamento entre pessoas do mesmo sexo".

Depois, foi pedido aos estudantes que apresentassem argumentos para defender tanto a constitucionalidade como a inconstitucionalidade do documento. [...]

Muçulmanos avisam criadores de South Park após piada sobre Maomé

A US Muslim website has warned the creators of South Park they face death after once again depicting the Muslim prophet Mohammed in an episode last week.

Trey Parker and Matt Stone celebrated the 200th episode of South Park with a storyline in which the actor Tom Cruise launches a class lawsuit against the animation’s townsfolk, uniting every celebrity that has ever been insulted by the cartoon.

During the episode, Cruise agrees not to pursue his lawsuit if the South Park characters can hand Mohammed over to him. It transpires Cruise and the other celebrities, who include Bono, the Pope, Mel Gibson, and George Lucas leading a ball-gagged Harrison Ford on a leash, only want Mohammed for his "goo", which they believe will lend them invulnerability to public ridicule. Mohammed eventually appears, but dressed in a bear suit. [...]

If the same exact criticisms being made against Islam today were also made centuries ago, is it reasonable to automatically dismiss them all as “Islamophobic” — that is, as “unfounded fear of and hostility towards Islam,” as the Council on American Islamic Relations would have it?

This is the question I often ask myself whenever I read pre-modern writings on Islam. Take that elementary schoolbook hero, Marco Polo and his famous memoirs, for example. By today’s standards, the 13^th century Venetian merchant would be denounced as a rabid “Islamophobe.” For me, however, his writings contain a far more important lesson — one in continuity — and deserve closer scrutiny [...].

The nurse at the centre of a growing storm over discrimination against Christians yesterday lost her fight to wear a crucifix at work. Shirley Chaplin, 54, was told by an employment tribunal that wearing the cross is not a 'mandatory requirement' of her faith.

She had been taken off hospital wards and moved to a desk job after refusing to remove the religious symbol. Yesterday the grandmother lost her religious discrimination case against the hospital trust that employed her. She described the result as 'a very bad day for Christianity'.

Seven bishops had supported her battle against the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital, who said the inch-long crucifix and chain to which it was attached raised health and safety concerns. The Archbishop of Canterbury referred to 'wooden-headed bureaucratic silliness' when highlighting her battle in his Easter sermon.

El altercado protagonizado por más de un centenar de musulmanes con nacionalidad austriaca en la Mezquita Catedral el pasado Miércoles Santo cuando intentaban orar con un imán y fueron desalojados ha dejado aún más claro a las asociaciones cristianas cordobesas que no hay que permitir el rezo compartido en este templo católico.

El primero en lamentar lo sucedido ha sido el presidente de la Asociación Presencia Cristiana, Miguel Ángel Parra, quien subrayó el hecho de que el grupo de musulmanes fuera armado. En este sentido, Parra dijo que ésto demuestra una «premeditación clara» por pensar que pudiera haber pelea. Como en otras ocasiones, Presencia Cristiana recuerda que la Catedral es «la Catedral de Córdoba y que es para su culto». La antigüedad como catedral cristiana, ahondó Parra, «es superior a la de época musulmana». Y les hizo recordar que hace 800 años que la Mezquita Catedral es cristiana y después de 500 de ocupación musulmana, fue 300 años atrás basílica visigoda. Por este motivo, dijo, «no entendemos la petición de culto compartido, ya que el número de mezquitas en la ciudad es suficiente para los musulmanes que residen en la ciudad y de otro lado, no entra dentro del rito musulmán el rezar en un lugar compartido por otras creencias». Gordon Brown said immigrants who are unwilling to honour British values are not welcome yesterday, as he pledged to do more to meet the concerns of the “mainstream majority”.

Mr Brown said he agreed that it was unfair if newcomers took advantage of Britain’s freedoms without making a fair contribution in return. But his attempt to deal with strong voter concerns over immigration was undermined when he was criticised by a watchdog for exaggerating the fall in migrant numbers.

A Mezquita-Catedral de Córdoba fue ayer el escenario de un enfrentamiento violento entre vigilantes, policías y turistas musulmanes que trataron de rezar en el interior del templo. De este modo, la polémica sobre la posibilidad de convertir el recinto en ecuménico ha experimentado un nuevo incidente protagonizado, según destacaron fuentes de la Policía Nacional, por algunos visitantes austríacos.

El Obispado de Córdoba informó a este periódico en un comunicado de que el grupo estaba compuesto por un total de 118 turistas extranjeros "que provocaron de manera organizada un reprobable episodio de violencia". Según informó la Policía Nacional, este incidente, en el que también intervino la Policía Local, finalizó con dos personas detenidas y una de ellas era una mujer. [...]

Depuis la mort, le 31 décembre, de son dirigeant ultralibéral Abdurrahman Wahid, le Nahdlatul Ulama (NU), la plus grande organisation musulmane d'Indonésie, de tradition soufie, affiche des positions de plus en plus conservatrices, voire proches du wahhabisme, lit-on dans le Jakarta Post. Ses juristes, rassemblés à Makassar (Célèbes), viennent ainsi de déclarer que la charia ne fixait aucun âge minimum au mariage, même s'ils ont fortement recommandé aux parents d'attendre que leurs enfants soient pubères pour les autoriser à convoler. Ils ont également prononcé une interdiction d'inhumer un musulman dans une tombe au côté d'un non-musulman, même si les deux défunts avaient des liens de parenté, tandis que des oulémas du NU ont joint leurs voix à celles de mouvements radicaux pour faire annuler la tenue du IVe congrès asiatique de l'Association des lesbiennes, des gays et des transexuels (ILGA) à Surabaya. Though police and media almost outnumbered the protestors, the demonstrations – three different ones in all – were noisy but peaceful. Chants of “Down with Jihad” and “Freedom for women” by the anti-mosque protestors mingled with “Stop Islamophobia” from the pro-mosque group led by members of Poland’s extra-parliamentary leftwing. A third group from the far-right All-Polish Youth stood to one side, their green flags fluttering in a bitter wind.

The anti-mosque demonstration was organized by the Future of Europe foundation, who fear the Islamisation of the continent. They claim that the group which will control the mosque, the Polish Muslim League, has possible links to the jihadist Muslim Brotherhood. [...]

Meanwhile, Mr Erdogan denied in an interview with Der Spiegel magazine that the 1915 massacre of Armenians in the Ottoman Empire was genocide.
